Red Flag Warning: Andrews Grass Fire

By: Jackie Smith
Updated: February 20, 2011

Andrews--Andrews County fire crews fought a grass fire for several hours today off Highway 115. The fire burned between 500-600 acres. Homes that were located near the area were evacuated. This was a precautionary mesaure because the strong winds were carrying the fire. Officials say that this sort of thing is to be expected.

"We were kind of expecting on these windy days like this. The humidity startys dropping and we kind of get ready for it. Keep all our trucks up in shape cause we know it's coming. Just don't know when," said  Ray Powers, Assistant Fire Chief, Andrews.

Powers did say they believe the fire started near the highway but are not sure what started it. Firefighters were able to contain the fire before it got out of hand.
