ODESSA -- Two Odessa residents who were arrested after a fatal shooting on Friday morning are facing charges for stealing copper wire.

Tonya Lynn Whitehead, 34, and David Allen Whitehead, 40, were each charged with two counts of theft for Friday's incident. According to Odessa Police, the Whiteheads and 53-year-old Rodney Alan Burns broke into a vehicle on 23rd and Muskingum early Friday morning to steal the wire. The vehicle's owner caught them breaking in. That homeowner yelled at the alleged burglars and shot at them from his home, hitting Burns. The Whiteheads and Burns fled the scene in a vehicle, but Burns died from his injuries.

The homeowner claims he was protecting his property. He has not been charged.
