AUSTIN -- It's severe weather week in the Lone Star State, and the Texas Division of Emergency Management has some tips to keep motorists safe.

With most of the winter season behind us, the biggest concern on the roadways in the months ahead is flooding after heavy rains. The division urges drivers to turn around and not drown when they come upon flooded roadways.

Six inches of water can cause drivers to lose traction, while a foot or more of flooding can make vehicles float. Flash floods can present a bigger danger, since the waters will rise rapidly -- trapping drivers in their vehicles and increasing drowning risks.

If drivers follow the "Turn Around, Don't Drown" rule, it will save lives.
