Massive Grassfire Raging in Howard County

By: Karl Rundgren
Updated: February 27, 2011
HOWARD COUNTY -- The Texas Forest Service is sending bulldozers to help handle the so-called "821 Fire."  Crews are already trying to slow it down, but fierce winds are fueling it.

The fire is near FM 821 near Forsan and is currently a mile long. It is also burning into Mitchell County.

This is the largest fire being reported at this time in the Permian Basin.

We have learned that one firefighter was injured taking this on, receiving second degree burns in the fire. It has also caused lots of damage, taking out three oil tanks, two homres, and one outbuilding.  All power in that area is now being shut down because of the fire.

Right now the fire is believed to be around 800 acres in size, and it is still expanding.

Extreme wind and dry conditions are creating the perfect conditions for wildfires. Roads are being shut down in some areas due to smoke and flames.
