ODESSA -- The E.C.I.S.D. Board of Trustees has unanimously voted not to renew 5th grade school teacher James Johnston's contract, which expires on the last day of June.

The board discussed their decision in a closed room for about an hour Wednesday evening before returning to the board room.

Johnston was put on administrative paid leave last month and E.C.I.S.D. has been very quiet on the reason why. They did stress that it was not a criminal investigation. However, E.C.I.S.D. officials did seize Johnston's personal computer.

The only public comments that were made at the meeting came from Johnston's attorney, Nicholas Enoch. He stated that the seizure of Johnston's computer was warrant-less and raised a host of legal issues.

I tried speaking with the board members after the meeting but they declined.

Johnston is allowed to file for a hearing to have his case reviewed and it is expected that he and his attorney will do so.
