FORT DAVIS -- Crews continue to battle a large fire in Jeff Davis County.

The Texas Forest Service tells Big 2 that the Rock House Fire has now 166,000 acres. The fire is 60 percent contained, as of Thursday.

The Forest Service was worried about the northwest side of the fire Thursday morning, since it was burning out of the control line. Crews were hoping that strong west winds would push the flames backwards into the Davis Mountains. Those actions would choke out the flames.

Meanwhile, crews worked hard to hold the fire line on the northeast edge of the fire, since the winds threatened to spread the blaze on that side.

The Texas Forest Service used Single Engine Air Tankers in the morning Thursday. They had to call off the aerial assault later in the day because of the high winds.
