MIDLAND -- The Colorado River Municipal Water District has set a limit of 24.7 million gallons of water a day for the city of Midland.

The city has gone over this number twice in the past week. If that trend continues, Midland could see more changes soon.

Last Friday, the city used 25 million gallons. This past Wednesday saw 26.3 million gallons used. These numbers are well over the limit, and they put the water system at risk

"If we put the system at risk, what we risk is or raw water supplier turning off our water, or cutting down our delivery so the rest of the cities don't run out," said Midland Director of Utilities Stuart Purvis.

A lot of people are confused when they can water. Here's a guide:

Let's say your day is Tuesday. You have from 6 PM Tuesday evening until 10 AM Wednesday morning.

The reason why the restrictions are set this way is because most people are only likely to water once a day -- saving them a lot of water.

If you don't don't follow the restrictions, you could face a $500 fine. Repeat offenders could see their water turned off.

If the City of Midland keeps going over the water limit they could see more restrictions -- such as watering only 2 days a week.

The city understands that a lot of people have invested money in their landscaping. But they say if a landscape can't survive under these water restrictions, then residents may need to change the landscaping altogether, since these restrictions could go on for a while.
