MIDLAND  - In this week's edition of Tuesday House Call, Dr. Ponder discusses an often misdiagnosed form of diabetes - MODY.

Up to 5% of all diabetics may have MODY - Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young. It's due to a single gene defect, but different MODY types exist (e.g., MODY 1, 2,...8).

This type of diabetes is frequently misdiagnosed as type 1 or type 2 Diabetes. MODY is more frequent in certain ethnic groups, namely people of Asian-Indian decent.

MODY is inherited from either parent and is usually diagnosed in patients before 25. It can be treated with oral medications.

Gene tests are available to determine if you have MODY, but the testing is expensive.
