MIDLAND -- Midland Police are investigating whether alcohol played a factor in an accident that seriously injured two people.

The wreck happened just after 4:15 AM Thursday. Officers say a pick-up truck crashed into the back of an 18-wheeler on the west-bound frontage road of Interstate 20 just past Fairgrounds Road.

Police say the pick-up truck driver Jorge Utajara, 27, and his passenger Marcos Yanez, 37, were both taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

Officers say it appears Utajara caused the accident when he tried to pass the stopped 18-wheeler.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured.
