Midland Memorial Hospital is urging everyone to take a moment and encourage the men in your lives to be more proactive about their health.
Men lead women in all of the top 10 causes of death. One of the reasons pointed out by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention is that women are 100% more likely to visit the doctor for annual examinations and preventive services than men.
Men are also less likely to monitor their diets and nutrition which leads to an increased risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke and even some cancers. Prostate cancer, for example is the second leading cause of cancer death in men and one of the risk factors is a high fat diet. Other risk factors include age, family history and race. Annual exams beginning at age 40 are important for screening and early detection of prostate cancer.
Bladder cancer is also a big concern in men since the ratio of men to women being diagnosed with this disease is 4 to 1. Risk factors that have been linked to bladder cancer include smoking or chewing tobacco, pollution/smog exposure, certain chemical exposures, industry exposure, age and a family history of bladder cancer
With both of these health issues, prevention and early detection can be key to protecting yourself from the disease or at least increasing your chance at a positive outcome. That's why it's so important for men to have an annual exam by a physician to help them stay on top of these health issues.
