Tues. House Call: Children and Insulin Pumps

MIDLAND - Dr. Stephen Ponder is back from serving as the Medical Director of the Texas Lion's Camp. In this Tuesday House Call, he shares some tips for managing children using insulin pumps.
Texas Lion's Camp is located in Kerrville, Texas. It was founded in 1949. At no cost, it serves children 8-15 years old with Diabetes and other special needs.

Dr. Ponder observed, 60% of the campers using an insulin pump this summer. That fact creates some new realities and challenges in caring for these kids in a busy and active, summer residential camp environment.
Here are three quick tips for managing insulin pumps and children:
1) Need strong parental involvement
2) Be aware of sudden malfunctions cause problems
3) Ongoing education and training is key
