Sul Ross Awarded Grant

ALPINE -- Sul Ross University received a $4.4 million grant.

    The U.S. Department of Education awarded the university the five year award to acheive the following goals: to increase enrollment of Hispanic and low-income students in the Sul Ross computer science program; increase the number of students from two-year colleges transferring into the program; increase pass rates in developmental mathematics for both computer science majors and non-majors; and, increase both the total number of graduates and Hispanic graduates.

    The grant will also be used to redesign the Bachelors of Science Degree in Computer Science. There will be five concentrations: traditional computer science, computer science applied technology, with tracks of communication and gaming technology; criminal justice computer technology; and computer science security technology.

    Sul Ross is also hoping the grant will go to updating their tutoring center with PLATO and other computer-based technologies as well as upgrading three rooms in Briscoe Administration Building into computer labs and a SMART classroom.
