One Midland cancer survivor is going bald as the bold step she's taking to get people talking about cancer.
For the month of October, Becky McDonald dyed her hair pink. McDonald is a thyroid cancer survivor herself and decided to take cancer awareness one step further; by first, dying her hair pink and then shaving it all off as a birthday gift for her father, Ralph Arnett Senior, who is celebrating another birthday.
"My dad was diagnosed with colon cancer just over 10 years ago and his first radiation was 9 years ago and today is his 79th birthday," explains Becky.
Becky says she was with her father every step of the way as he beat stage four colon cancer.
"And last year when I got thyroid cancer and was super sick, I mean so sick I had to have someone help me walk to the 10 feet from my bed to the bathroom, my dad was there," says Becky.
Becky says, she's a survivor because of her dad's support.
"People have been there for me and you've got to pay it forward," says Becky.
Friends and family held back tears as they watched Becky's pink hair hit the floor.
"I'm real proud of her and it's one of my very best birthdays," says Arnett.
Becky's hairdresser, Yolanda Parks says she's honored to be a part.
"Who better to do a campaign for breast cancer or any kind of cancer because it's going to effect the hair more than any part of their body," says Parks.
As a hair dresser, Parks says it's her job to help her clients with cancer emotionally get through losing their hair. "You know we're here for them," says Parks.
Becky's birthday gift for her dad, also raising money for the American Cancer Society.
"I'm getting the finical help from people around who see me and stop and say why. They asked my about the pink hair and now they're going to ask me why did you shave your head," says Becky.
Becky's bald choice, raising bold awareness about cancer.
Becky says she plans to raise money every year for the American Cancer Society, but probably will not shave her head again. In the meantime, you can still donate the American Cancer Society in honor of Becky being bold and bald.
