WASHINGTON, DC -- More than 49 million Americans are living in poverty, according to numbers released by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The figures show that 16 percent of the nation live in poverty.

The previous estimate released in September stated that 46 million people were living below the poverty line.

The newest figure from the Census Bureau includes people using various government benefits and expenses -- such as food stamps and subsidized housing.

The poverty line is at $24,343 a year for a family of two adults and two kids.
