The Alamo to Charge Admission Fees?

Updated: November 8, 2011
ALAMO -- The Alamo says it gets more than two-and-a-half million visitors a year. And its new overseers say they plan to keep it free to all those people.

For the Daughters of the Republic of Texas it has been a constant battle to raise funds to maintain the Alamo. However, charging admission to visitors and bus tours is not part of the fund raising plans.

A legislation was passed putting the General Land Office in charge of the Alamo. In January the Land Office will begin to oversee the duties related to the Alamo Complex, but they will be working alongside the Daughters.

The Daughters say they are working very closely with the GLO in formulating an agreement between the two groups and a lot of other plans for the Alamo.

State Senator Leticia Van de Putte says any fees for admission or other potential revenue streams will be decided by the General Land Office. Also saying, "The shrine needs money for preservation and maintenance, period. The Daughters of the Republic of Texas have not been able to provide it."

The legislation does allow for admission fees to be charged by the Daughters, but Van de Putte said," I have said it many times on behalf of the Daughters that we don't feel its right to charge admission.

The Alamo complex dates back to 1724, the year construction began. The battle of the Alamo took place in 1836.
