Bike Roasted Coffee

Updated: November 9, 2011
A unique way to roast coffee coming out of Davis, California. Business Owner, Alex Roth, came up with the idea of using the power of bicycles to roast and deliver coffee.

Davis, California is a college town where bicycles outnumber people. One Davis resident decided to use a set of these wheels in a unique way.

A few years ago, Roth got into the coffee business, but knows it can be a competitive environment. Wanting to keep his business green Roth came up with a brilliant bike idea.

Roth says, "We're in Davis so it makes perfect sense to have sort of a wacky bike-powered invention."

He roasts coffee beans using the pedal power and heat from propane; using a labyrinth of chains and sprockets, every Tuesday Alex and a few friends begin the roasting process.

Since building the machine almost four years ago, he's roasted over twenty thousand pounds of coffee.

Keeping with his green theme, the jars of coffee are delivered to over 160 homes via bicycles. Roth employs high school students who say they appreciate what Alex is doing for the environment.

He's completely changed their morning cup of joe.
