American Honey Doesn't Meet International Quality Standards

By: Stephanie Castillo
Updated: November 10, 2011
A new study says most honey sold in U.S. stores does not meet international quality standards.

Researchers say they analyzed dozens of jars and plastic bears of honey from stores across the country for pollen content. They discovered many of them had the pollen filtered out.

Honey experts say without the pollen particles, the nectar would not pass quality standards sent by most of the world's food safety agencies.

Without the pollen, there is no way to tell if the honey came from legitimate and safe sources.
The study appears in Food Safety News.
