Senator Kel Seliger is calling for the lizard to be granted an exemption from the Endangered Species Act.
Seliger says the proposed endangered species listing is unfounded and bewildering, since Texas is the largest daily producer of oil and natural gas in the nation.
Seliger also says the Endangered Species Act need to be overhauled and reworked to adapted to meet 21st Century needs.
Meanwhile, Seliger isn't the only politician to target the Sand Dune Lizard.
Both of New Mexico's senators are asking U.S. Fish and Wildlife to delay the decision, so that more research can be gathered.
As it stands right now, the decision to put the lizard on the list should be made in December.
Critics have said the scientific data about the lizard has been questionable.
