Cinergy Cinemas Announces New Midland Theater

MIDLAND -- For years Midland has been a one indoor movie theater town. At first, that didn't seem odd, but as the city has continued to grow, it left many scratching their heads.
Now, that's about to change.
Cinergy Cinemas has announced that they will be constructing a new 11-screen movie theater and entertainment complex in Gateway Plaza, near Loop 250 and Business-20. In addition to have 11 screens, the center will also have a rope course, 50 game arcade, laser course, and more.
The movie theaters themselves are also distinctive. One of them will be the HDX Screen, which measures 71 x 40 and is the largest screen between Dallas and Phoenix. The screen resembles and I-Max screen, and will have special rocking chairs inside. The other digital screens will be more traditional, though the front row in each will consist of full recliners.
"Midlanders will love it. Odessans will love it," said Bobby Burns from the Midland Chamber of Commerce, "It will be a great addition to our loop and our city."
There is another unique feature to Cinergy Cinemas. It's considered a dine-in theater, and patrons can order food and eat inside the movie theater. They can also order beer and wine beverages, though the chain owners believe they are still a family destination first and foremost.
Finally, the new theater will have some competitive pricing. They are planning to offer $5.00 matinee movies, and $7.00 evening features. There would be an upcharge for 3-D films and for the HDX Screen, but the owners believe it will be a strong competitor for Hollywood Theaters Tall City 14.
"We're five miles from the Hollywood 14-plex, " said Jeff Benson from Cinergy, "I don't see us having any problems. We'll show the same movies they are, and like I said, this is capitalism at its purest. Let the best theater win."
Cinergy hopes to break ground next spring, and have the new theater up and operational by the end of 2012.
