CBS news is reporting ATF officials used the failed program to argue for stricter firearms regulations in four states, including Texas. The "Demand Letter Three" would require some gun dealers to report multiple rifle sales.
Cornyn says if the reports are true, it reaches a new level of arrogance and corruption by Washington.
The ATF asked gun dealers to sell the weapons so federal officials could track American guns to Mexican drug cartels. CBS reports at least one gun dealer questioned the program over concerns for border official safety and possibly allowing the guns into Mexico.
ATF lost track of thousands of firearms, some of which may have been used in the shooting death of a U.S. federal agent.
