Federal Ruling Against Arizona's Controversial Immigration Law

ARIZONA -- A federal court judge in Phoenix decided Arizona authorities cannot arrest people suspected of being illegal immigrants, solely based on their physical appearance, and ethnicity.

In a ruling on Friday, Judge G. Murray Snow wrote the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and its officers can no longer detain any person based only on the officer's personal belief the person might be in the U.S. illegally.

The judge said deputies cannot reasonably believe a person violated a state or federal law simply because of the way they look.

It's the latest setback for supporters of Arizona's controversial immigration laws.
