BAGHDAD --  Al-Qaeda is claiming responsibility for last week's deadly bombings in Iraq.

The blasts Thursday morning killed nearly 70 people and injured over 200.

Half a dozen roadside bombs and six car bombs exploded within two hours. They targeted residential, commercial and government areas.

Al-Qaeda says the attacks were done in support of Iraq's minority Sunni Muslims.

The Shiite Muslims dominate Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's government.

Violence has exploded since U.S. forces exited the country.

Vice President Joe Biden spoke with al-Maliki over the weekend. He's trying to help stabilize the country's tenuous democracy.
