Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley used such measures as education levels and annual income, which ranged from about $16,000 dollars to $150,000.
They found that regardless of what measure was used, the higher-status people often behaved in ways that served their own self-interest.
The study's lead author, Paul Piff, says elevated wealth status seems to make people want even more, and that desire leads them to bend or break rules.
The research is published in the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences."
