WASHINGTON, DC --  President Obama says the U.S. needs to make a renewed effort in education so the nation keeps pace with global competitors.

Addressing the National Governors Association at the White House, the President called on state leaders to invest more in education.

Obama complained that too many governors are cutting education too deeply in order to balance their state budgets.

He said, quote, "Other countries are doubling down on education and their investment in teachers  --  we should too."

The President argued that the U.S. economy continues to recover from the deep recession.

He vowed to continue doing everything possible to sustain the recovery.

Opening the session, Vice President Biden said the economy was in a "free fall" when President Obama took office.

He said the American people are "tired of being tired" and "tired of being told how bad things are."  Biden insisted that things are definitely better than they were in 2008.
