HOUSTON -- The Texas Railroad Commission has named a new chairman.

The agency -- which oversees oil and gas drilling in the Lone Star State -- elected Barry Smitherman as its new chairman on Tuesday.

Smitherman replaces Elizabeth Ames Jones as the commission's chairman. Ames Jones recently resigned her post to pursue a U.S. Senate seat.

Smitherman has said he will ensure the Railroad Commission uses scientific standards in their decision-making, and he hopes to keep politicians in Washington, D.C. from affecting the oil and gas related economy in Texas.
