GRANDFALLS-ROYALTY -- 2011 was a banner year for the Grandfalls-Royalty Cowboys. They finished 12-2 overall, 6-0 in the district, and made it to the regional finals. Now, they have to live up to the expectations.

The Cowboys return six starters from the team a year ago, and are picked by most to finish at the top of their district yet again. The team welcomes new head coach Joe Helms, who comes from Bryson where he led that team to a quarterfinal berth in the playoffs. .

Both Helms and his players know that after a strong season last year, a red target will be painted on their backs.  "With expectation, you've got to step up to that," Helms said. "I think it's definitely better to be the hunted rather than the huntee at this point. These kids have experienced a district championship, went through that unscathed last year, and they're looking beyond that now."

The Cowboys open their season Aug. 30 against Marfa in McCamey.
