FORSAN -- The Buffaloes are making the drop in class rank as they join a very tough 4-1A Division I. Defending state champion Stamford is among Forsan's competition, but the Buffs consider themselves contenders.

The Buffs are coming off a playoff season, and they return seven starters on both offense and defense.

Depth is also a plus for Forsan. A JV class which finished 7-1 last season will be making its move to varsity. Leading the way will be sophomore quarterback Toa Maumau, who has plenty of promise, despite starting just one varsity game in 2011.

There are plenty of positives heading into this season, but head coach Jason Phillips knows the move to class 1A will be anything but easy.

"You would think the move down to 1A would just be great, but our 1A district is going to be tough," Phillips said. "We're going to have to continue to work hard, and the experience from last year will help."

Forsan will be a part of the ASCO Football Classic at Grande Communications Stadium in Midland when they take on Coahoma on Thursday, Aug 30.
