Hobbs (NM) Woman Sentenced To 12 Years In Prison After Child's Death

HOBBS, NM -- A Hobbs, NM woman will spend about a decade behind bars for causing her young son's death.

Court officials in Lea County, NM tell Big 2 that Miranda Kuykendall was sentenced to 12 years on September 14th.

However, Kuykendall has already served 2 years of the sentence, and she could have as much as 17 percent of the sentence reduced for good behavior.

Hobbs Police found Kuykendall's 21-month-old son Braxtin dead at her Hobbs home in 2009.

The young boy reportedly had severe burns and bruises on his body, and it appeared that he had been repeatedly physically abused.

Braxtin's older brother also reportedly had non-life-threatening bruises on his body.

Police arrested Kuykendall and Braxtin's father -- Kuykendall's boyfriend Chris Elliot -- after the incident.

Elliot pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 28 years in prison.

Officials say since the crime qualifies as a serious violent offense, meaning that Elliot and Kuykendall must both serve at least 83 percent of their sentences.
