Authorities say they used a 4 foot wide tunnel to escape from a prison in northern Mexico on Monday.
A massive search by police and soldiers is underway with authorities setting up blockades on roads leading to the US - Mexico border.
Three prison officials, including the director have been detained as police investigate their possible involvement.
A woman says three men came knocking on her door last night, asking for clothes and water.
She obliged and only later considered they may have been among the escapees.
Police are offering up a bounty of nearly 16 thousand dollars for information leading to the capture of each inmate.
