ODESSA -- There is a police presence around Odessa High School, as officers look for a man who reportedly flashed a gun at three OHS students about 8:30 a.m. Friday.

Ector County ISD officials have set up a perimeter around the campus as a precaution.

ECISD officials canceled the first-period pep rally because of the situation, but say the rest of the school day is expected to go on as normally scheduled.

Administrators stress, OHS is not on lockdown,

Here's a full statement from ECISD Director of Communications, Mike Adkins:

Around 8:30 a.m. three Odessa High School students were driving to school when they reportedly saw a black male wearing a gray hoodie and black shorts at 9th Street and Bernice; as the kids drove by the suspect flashed what appeared to be a black, snub-nosed revolver for them to see - he did not point it at them or threaten them. The suspect then continued to walk west away from the school.  When they got to school the students told an ECISD officer about it and our school district police took the precaution of setting up a perimeter around the school and then beginning a search of the neighborhood. District police contacted the Odessa Police Department for assistance.
Due to the timing of the report and the uncertainty of the situation, school officials and ECISD police chose to cancel the first-period pep rally but the rest of the school day is scheduled to go on as normal. OHS is not in lockdown and it is not in shelter-in-place; the school never was placed in lockdown or shelter-in-place. ECISD police did not feel it necessary to do so because of the report of the suspect moving away from the school and the fact that our police had the perimeter set up very quickly.
ECISD police are leading the search for the suspect and they believe they know where he is and they are in the process of confirming it. They do not believe there is any threat to the school but will leave extra officers at the campus for the rest of the school day as a precaution.
