A report in the Journal of Industrial Ecology says the factories which make electric cars can emit more toxic waste than conventional ones.
Scientists from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology says the production phase for the environmentally friendly cars require a lot more chemicals.
Still, they say electric cars can make sense in the big picture if the electric used to run them comes from low-carbon sources.
That means, if your power comes from coal, then an electric car isn't really helping with pollution.
