Because Big Spring I.S.D. has 250 more enrolled students than they did last year, they now can't maintain the required 22-student-to-1-teacher ratio at all grade levels.
On Thursday, the Big Spring I.S.D. Board of Trustees voted to ask the State of Texas for a class size waiver.
The waiver would allow for larger class sizes for some time.
"You would want to have smaller class sizes, but at this point we just don't have [teaching] applicants," Big Spring I.S.D. Superintendent Steven Saldivar told Big 2. "We have continued to look over the summer and even into the start of school. There just aren't any applicants."
Superintendent Saldivar also says that he doesn't think the teacher shortage at Big Spring I.S.D. will be manageable until next semester at the earliest.
However, the district they are still trying to hire teachers.
Saldivar also says teachers have done a great job handling the increased student load.
