Challenger Pete Gallego Predicted to Win Congressional District 23 Seat

ALPINE -- It was a nail biter as the election results were counted, but the Texas Tribune is now saying that Pete Gallego will be the new Congressman from the 23rd Congressional District.

Republican Francisco Canseco was first elected to the seat in 2010, carried in by a flurry of Republican energy across the country.  Canseco, an attorney and businessman, was also one of the few freshmen in the U.S. House to serve on the Financial Services Committee.

Ciro Rodriguez tried to get the seat back in 2012, but was defeated in the Democratic primary by former Texas State Representative Pete Gallego.

Gallego, an Alpine native, graduated from Sul Ross State and was later elected to the State House in 1990. During that time he led the Mexican American Legislative Caucus and also gained notice for his legislative work.

The fight between Canseco and Gallego was a vicious one, leading to a number of ads that drew criticism and heated words. The two had one debate, in spanish, and never met for a second debate.
