A statement from the Obama camp says the president called House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell.
He also phoned top-ranking Democrats, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi.
According to the statement, the president talked about the agenda for the rest of the year and the message he believes voters sent last night on the need for both parties to work together.
Congress remains divided with Republicans keeping control of the House and Democrats holding onto the Senate.
