The people of Gaza and southern Israel have suffered through eight days of rocket attacks.

As of 2pm Eastern on Wednesday, both sides have agreed to cease fire.

President Obama called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to commend him for the agreement and said the US was committed to Israeli security.

Hamas called the ceasefire a tactical defeat for Israel.

Egypt has taken the lead in mediating an end to the bloodshed in Gaza and Israel, and will continue to progress efforts toward a more sustainable solution.
