You might not know it, but Mexico isn't really called just plain "Mexico".

Now outgoing Mexican president Felipe Calderon has proposed officially making the country name "Mexico".  Right now, it is the Mexican United States.  It was name after it gained independence from Spain in the 1820's.  It was a name inspired by the American Independence Movement.

But now, Calderon, who is leaving office in the next few days, says it's time to "retake the beauty and simplicity of our motherland's name: Mexico".

It's still too early to know if the new Mexican congress will quickly act on Calderon's bill or tackle other more pressing matters.
