MIDLAND -- The Midland City Council is taking steps to help ease the city's housing crisis.

On Tuesday, the Midland City Council approved more than half a dozen permits for residential development..

City leaders say this will help pave the way for 5,000 new residences over the next 24-36 months.

"I think we're seeing more and more requests for permits to build housing that we've seen in a long time," Midland City Councilman, District 3, John James told Big 2. "It's the good news. Ultimately what it does is more supply helps to stabilize the rates people are paying. So it's good news."

Midland leaders say that the development includes single family homes and multi-family units.

The majority of the new development is slated to go up near the Scharbauer Sports Complex in West Midland -- as well as locations in South Midland.
