Culberson, Hudspeth Counties Considering Switching Judicial Districts

VAN HORN -- Two West Texas counties could soon be switching judicial districts.

According to The Big Bend Sentinel, Hudspeth and Culberson counties are considering switching judicial district representation from the 34th district (headed by distict attorney Jaime Esparza) the 83rd Judicial District (soon to be headed by district attorney-elect Rod Ponton).

Hudspeth County commissioners reportedly met on November 27th to discuss the move, but the discussion was tabled since only two commissioners and the county judge were present at the meeting.

Ponton was present at the meeting, and he reportedly expressed a willingness to take on the additional counties.

Meanwhile, Culberson County commissioners have not discussed the possible change.

However, Culberson County Judge Carlos Urias told The Big Bend Sentinel that the change should be looked into.

Several officials in Hudspeth and Culberson counties reportedly think that a switch from the more urban 34th Judicial District (which also covers El Paso) to the more rural 83rd Judicial District would best suit the sparsely-populated counties.
