Sul Ross State University Student Killed In Pecos County Rollover Crash

PECOS COUNTY -- A teenager dies in a Pecos County rollover crash.

    The fatal crash happened about 27 miles north of Fort Stockton on TX 18 around 7:10 AM on December 9th.

    Texas Department of Public Safety troopers tell Big 2 that Ian Matthew Smith was driving north on TX 18 when his 2005 Ford pickup truck went off the roadway, went into a right side skid and overturned.

    Smith, 19, died at the scene.

    Troopers say that the Three Rivers resident was wearing a seat belt.

    Smith was a sophomore at Sul Ross State University in Alpine.

    Smith was also was a linebacker for the Sul Ross State Lobos football team.

    A memorial service was held for Smith on Tuesday evening at the Marshall Auditorium on the Sul Ross State University campus.

    Funeral services for Smith will be held in Three Rivers on December 15th.
