WASHINGTON, D.C. -- It's official.

The Lesser Prairie Chicken has been recommended as a threatened species by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service published their recommendation in the federal register on Tuesday.

A 90 day public comment period has started on the potential listing of the species.

That comment period closes on March 11, 2013.

This listing is similar to the Dunes Sagebrush Lizard debate that was waged in late 2011 and early 2012.

Oil and gas producers worried that the listing of the lizard on the Endangered Species List would hurt drilling operations and damage the West Texas economy.

The Dunes Sagebrush Lizard ultimately wasn't placed on the Endangered Species List.

Meanwhile, environmentalists are recommending that species be listed as threatened and endangered to make sure the animals are protected.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service decided not to list the Dunes Sagebrush Lizard as endangered, after oil producers set aside habitat land for the lizard.

A similar solution could await the Lesser Prairie Chicken.
