CARLSBAD, NM -- An Eddy County, NM woman is facing animal cruelty charges, after she allegedly abused several horses.

According to The Carlsbad Current-Argus, Pamela Lunsford was arraigned on 6 counts of misdemeanor cruelty to animals.

Police say that one of Lunsford's horses was found dead along Kiowa Drive southwest of Carlsbad on September 4th.

Another horse reportedly had untreated sores, cuts and chipped hooves, while 3 others were found to be incredibly thin.

The 5 horses that had survived the abuse were seized and sold to the New Mexico Livestock Board, in hopes that the board could provide them better care.

Pamela Lunsford, 40, reportedly said that the animals were the responsibility of her ex-husband, Shawn Lunsford.

Pamela Lunsford reportedly added that Shawn Lunsford had failed to honor a divorce agreement to pay child support and care for the animals.

If convicted, Lunsford could face a $1,000 fine or up to 364 days in prison.
