Former President George H. W. Bush in Intensive Care

HOUSTON---Former President George H.W. Bush is in intensive care at a Houston hospital.

A spokesman for his office says the 41st president was admitted to the I.C.U. on Sunday after a series of medical setbacks, including a fever.

Bush is said to be in guarded condition and that his doctors are cautiously optimistic.

His spokesman also says the 88-year old is alert and talking with medical staff, and is surrounded by family.

Bush has been in the hospital for more than a month.

Doctors were initially treating him for bronchitis and a lingering cough.
