MIDLAND -- A Midland man will spend the next 3 years on probation, after he pretended to be a Texas Ranger.

Donald Walter McBroom was sentenced to 3 years probation and fined $5,000 in federal court in Midland on January 10th.

McBroom, 65, had previously pleaded guilty to charges of impersonating an officer or employee of the United States.

McBroom -- a trucker -- pretended to be a Texas Ranger and a member of the Permian Basin Oilfield Theft Task Force in order to avoid fines and other registration costs for his truck.

McBroom reportedly even showed a fake badge and other Texas Ranger items to Texas Department of Public Safety troopers during traffic stops in 2011 and 2012.

However, McBroom was not an actual law enforcement officer.

McBroom was arrested on September 19, 2012.
