MIDLAND -- Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott is speaking out, after President Barack Obama unveiled potential new federal gun laws.

During an appearance in Midland on Wednesday, Abbott weighed in on Second Amendment rights and possible new gun control laws.

"One thing we all need to recognize -- that is, what happened in Connecticut was a horrible tragedy," Abbott told Big 2. "Any parent, any American, their heart has to bleed when they see children gunned down by a gunman like at that elementary school.

"[But] is it appropriate for politicians to overreact and take actions that are both counterproductive and unconstitutional? So what we're prepared to do is to ensure that constitutional guarantees are not stripped away because of political overreaction."

Abbott was the keynote speaker at the Midland Republican Women's Luncheon on Wednesday.

Abbott spoke about the Permian Basin being a stronghold for both energy production and conservative principles.
