ODESSA -- Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent for many Christian churches around the world -- including those in the Permian Basin.

St. Ann's Catholic Church in Midland had 3 masses for Ash Wednesday.

Officials with St. Ann's Catholic Church tell Big 2 that they've had a large turnout for Ash Wednesday services.

The services consist of readings from several parts of the bible.

Most notably, parishioners mark their forehead with the sign of a cross in ashes as a symbol of their closeness with Jesus.

"We are invited to repent of our sinfulness and to hear the message of the Good News of Jesus Christ ," Msgr. Larry Droll of St. Ann's Catholic Church told Big 2. "And use this time between now and Easter to draw closer to our Lord Jesus Christ."

Lent -- a time of prayer and penance -- will last 6 and a half weeks until Easter Sunday.

The first observances of Lent actually date back to the 4th century.

The final Ash Wednesday mass at St. Ann's will be held at 5:45 PM Wednesday.
