LEA COUNTY, NM -- A Lea County, NM oilfield worker is accused of shooting another man in the head along a southeast New Mexico highway.

Woodrow Kent Dunn, Jr. was arrested on February 24th.

Lea County Sheriff's deputies say Dunn Jr. shot David Rogers in the head in the 3600 block of Tatum Highway (NM 206) (just north of the intersection with U.S. 82 and northeast of Lovington, NM) around  4:10 PM on February 24th.

Lovington Police rushed to the scene, and Rogers (who's from Hobbs) was rushed to Nor-Lea Hospital in Lovington with a single gunshot wound to the head.

However, Rogers, 52, was pronounced dead at Nor-Lea Hospital.

Lea County Sheriff's deputies later determined that Rogers was driving Dunn Jr., 32, and Jeremy Stane, 34, back from an oilfield site when Dunn Jr. started acting strange.

Dunn Jr.'s father -- 59-year-old Woodrow Dunn, Sr. -- allegedly agreed to meet Rogers along Tatum Highway.

Dunn Sr. reportedly walked Dunn Jr. to his pickup truck and then walked to Rogers' pickup truck to pick up some work clothes.

However, as Dunn Sr. was talking to Rogers, he reportedly heard a loud bang and noticed that Rogers had been shot in the head.

Deputies then say that Dunn Sr. noticed that Dunn Jr. was holding a weapon from his truck, and he reportedly ran over and took the gun away from his son.

Dunn Sr. then reportedly called law enforcement -- who arrested Dunn Jr.

Now, Dunn Jr. is charged with first degree murder.

As of Monday evening, Dunn Jr. was being held in the Lea County Detention Center on $1 million bond.
