ODESSA -- What's in a dress?

Fabric, sequins, what about dreams?

That's exactly what Kelly Blau of University Bridal in Odessa sees, and that's why she started Operation Glass Slipper, designed to help out those girls who may not otherwise be able to afford a prom dress.

"We want to bring them in and give them a fun time, that Cinderella moment that every girl dreams about: going to prom and getting all dressed up," Blau said.

Blau believes that this can be a first step toward empowering these girls to fulfill goals beyond just prom.

"If she can do this, maybe she can graduate, get out of a tough situation, go to college and we want to give them that first step, because it's so much more than a dress," Blau continued.

University Bridal has been hosting Operation Glass Slipper for three years.

They gave away 30 dresses last year, and Blau expects to give away 30 to 35 during Wednesday nights event, which starts at 6:00 PM.

The prom party benefits underprivileged girls from around the Permian Basin, not just Midland and Odessa.

Girls have to be recommended to attend  the event.

All dresses are donated by the community, and Blau wants to remind everyone that even though this is a one night event, University Bridal is always accepting prom dress donations.
