LAMESA -- The City of Lamesa is one step closer to hiring a new city manager.

According to The Lamesa Press-Reporter, the Lamesa City Council interviewed 3 candidates for the Lamesa City Manager position during their March 5th meeting.

Lamesa Mayor Dave Nix says that the council will interview another candidate on March 20th.

The applicant who is hired on will replace longtime Lamesa City Manager Fred Vera.

Vera -- who has served as Lamesa City Manager since June 16, 2003 -- is planning on retiring on May 30th.

Nix says Lamesa leaders hope to hire a new city manager by May 1st.

If Lamesa leaders stick to their timetable, the new hire will be able to have a transition period while Vera is still in office.
