Toddler Fatally Abused in Hobbs

HOBBS, NM -- At approximately 6 Friday morning, Hobbs Police responded to the 400 block of West Alston reference to a 911 call due to a 21-month-old child not breathing.
Upon arrival of officers and Hobbs EMS the baby was deceased.
A representative from the Office of the Medical Investigations (OMI) pronounced the infant deceased at the scene. The investigation revealed that the child had been abused resulting in death.
Ultimately, 27 year old Christopher Elliott and the mother of the child, 21 year old Miranda Copeland were arrested. Both were charged with Abandonment or Abuse of a Child Resulting in Death (1st degree felony). They were also charged with Abandonment or Abuse of a Child (3rd degree felony) for abuse to another one of Copeland’s children who is 3 years old.
Both are being held in the Hobbs City Jail.
