Midland Police Investigate Evening Murder

MIDLAND -- On Wednesday June 9, 2010 at 9:27p.m., Midland Police responded to a shooting at 3605 Thomason.

Police found 28 year old Weldon Maurice Cooks on the front porch of the residence with a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Emergency medical personnel transported Cooks to the Midland Memorial Emergency room where he was rushed to surgery.

Cooks died a little after 8:00 a.m., Thursday, June 10, Critical Care Unit of Midland Memorial Hospital.

Justice of the Peace Joe Matlock has ordered an autopsy and the body will be taken to Tarrant County for an autopsy.

Details of the events leading up to the shooting are sketchy and witness accounts are conflicting so detectives are sorting through witness accounts and physical evidence.

The investigation continues on the suspect or suspects. The motive for the shooting is still to be determined.
